What is a doula?

A doula is a trained and experienced, professional birth support person.  I meet with you while you are pregnant (prenatally,) support you during your labor and birth, and continue to provide emotional support and education during the initial postpartum (after birthing) period.  By meeting with you before birth, I get to know your hopes and expectations for your birth, and you get to know me.  By the time you are in labor, you have a skilled professional--whom you are comfortable with--to help guide you through labor.  I am there for you physically, emotionally, and intellectually.

How can a doula effect your birth?

I will help you wherever you choose to birth--your home, a birthing center, or a hospital, and with your choice of care provider: obstetrician, physician, or midwife (for example.)  Working with your partner, I offer another source of comfort, encouragement, and assistance.  When doulas attend births, generally labors are shorter with fewer complications, babies are healthier, and they breastfeed more easily.

Who am I?

Picture
I am very passionate about the birthing process, and empowering women to have births on their own terms, which they can be proud of.  I support, educate, guide, advocate for, and empower women to become mothers, men to become fathers, and couples and babies to become families.

I have been a labor and birth doula since 2009.  I received my training through Bates Technical College in Tacoma, WA, and am certified through Doulas of North America (DONA.)  I also volunteer at St. Joseph Medical Center as a birth doula.  I have worked with teen parents, families conceiving with IVF, high risk clients, premature infants, same-sex parents, cesarean births, single parents, water births, and survivors of childhood sexual abuse.

I am particularly sensitive to women who experience postpartum depression, as I have gone through it myself.  I cannot treat or offer medical advice, but I can provide a safe place for you emotionally, and will keep anything you choose to share with me strictly confidential.  I can provide resources for you should you need them.

I tailor my care to each mother, listening to and watching your reactions as I explain and demonstrate birthing positions which I believe will help alleviate the intensity of labor, and help you progress toward delivery.  I will help you focus on relaxation techniques when you need it.  I will help your partner and any other members of your birthing team to understand what is happening.

As a doula, I am educated in the emotions and feelings that pregnant, laboring, or postpartum mothers can experience.  As a mother, I have experienced many of the emotions that you will experience.  I will help you understand each as you are experiencing them.

I believe in educating you about your options, and empowering you to make your own decisions regarding your birth.  If at any time you do not understand a procedure, I will make sure that you are given the chance to ask any questions of your provider, or I will explain to the best of my abilities what is happening.  I will do my best to make sure that you experience a birth with which you will treasure.

Finally, I believe that it is important to note my previous education and notable experiences as it is relevant to who I am as a person.  I have a Bachelor's degree from the University of Washington in Interdisciplinary Visual Arts, with a minor in Art History.  I studied Spanish in Guadalajara, Mexico.  I have been an office assistant, a nanny, a personal cook, and owned a daycare.  Currently, I'm a stay at home mama to two sweet, active, funky little boys.  I have a pug, two cats, and four chickens.  I currently enjoy Zumba, reading romantic historic novels, and plodding away on half-finished sweaters with my somewhat remedial knitting skills.  I have a small sewing business as well.
